I like the forum style, because people come and go as they wish, and I can't think of a time I'd use it other than to talk to the lovely admin of this site, but to do that, I just have to yell outside my door. lol.

Write a short story (no more than 100 words) or a short poem. However, there is a catch... the majority of your word count must start with the letter 'M.' There will be a bonus to anyone who only uses 'M' words. Get cracking and post your finished product in this thread!

Women in fantasy are great. Several movies that I like have female heroines. Underworld, Bloodrayne, Ultraviolet and Resident evil are just a few examples. I write mostly current day fiction and I usually have a female as the lead character.

I find that, when I'm further into the book my characters seem to be more in-depth, even with the plot line. My writing comes more to life, and then I feel I have to go back to the beginning and redo the first chapters so that they are up-to-par with the rest of the book.

At first I use outlines only because I want to have a feel for what I'm going to write about. I use the outlines, but usually my mind comes up with something better than what I had originally planned.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most definitely characters come first. It brings to mind 'which came first; the chicken or the egg?' in a sense that before we were born God knew us. I like to think of my characters first - developing their personality, their traits - and then figure out what part they have to play in the overall story that I want to write. (The idea for the story already being in my head - but not full plot thought out thoroughly). Afte I develop my character(s) I place the story around them, letting them grow and 'mature' as some might say.

The author Stephenie Meyer of 'Twilight' (2005) began to write her best seller because of dream that she couldn't get out of her head. She develped her characters first, in which she also found the story she was intended to write.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently did a review on the book mentioned above - thought I would let people know that their dream of having their book published can come true.
Read and reply if you want.

http://reflector.uindy.edu/?p=210

And Stephenie Meyer explains on www.stepheniemeyer.com about her process of publishing her best seller "Twilight" for those interested in the process.
